What is the difference between Grid Tie and Off Grid Solar PV Systems?

A "grid-tie" solar system is one that ties into the power grid, drawing electricity from the grid when needed, then exporting excess electricity back into the grid when the local customer isn't using the full capacity being generated by PV panels (photovoltaic).

Off-grid solar energy systems convert sunlight into electricity without connecting to local utility grids. The Energy is stored in Battery banks and is utilized for your appliances. This option is suitable for remote locations where access to the national grid is not available.

What are the Components of a Grid Tie Solar System?

About PV systems

How do PV modules convert sunlight into electricity?

Solar panels are made from thin layers of silicon, a semiconductor material that absorbs the sun’s rays and turns them into electricity. When photons from the sun hit the photovoltaic cells in a solar panel, electrons in the solar cell are knocked loose from their atom, allowing the electrons to flow freely. Solar cells force these electrons to flow in a certain direction along a wire, creating a current, which is then drawn off the cell to create electricity that powers your home or business

What happens if the PV module is blocked by leaves, dust and shadows?

If fallen leaves, shadows or something similar cover a PV module, resistance increases at the affected area and overall power output decreases only on the affected module while the other PV modules perform at their peak. This technology is achieved with the SolarEdge Power Optimizer where module level performance is observed.

How Will J Lanka conclude on the Solar PV capacity for me?

We will need to analyze your electricity bill based on your consumption and any possibilities for future expansion of Electrical Equipment at your premises. If your property is under construction we will analyze your roof availability and a prediction of your energy consumption.

How will I use electricity during night?

Our solar PV system is designed to produce electricity sufficient for a day’s consumption. Any excess power produced during the day will be exported to the grid and will be utilized back during the night from the grid. This flow is monitored through the net meter. Eg. Imagine you require 100 units of electricity for a day; therefore we design a system that produces 100 units for a day. Its observed only 80 units are needed for the day consumption. The remaining 20 units will be exported to the grid and credited to your account. During night time, the Solar system shuts down and these excess 20 units are drawn back from the grid for your night consumption.

Does PV work well in cold weather?

As photovoltaics generate electricity from light, not heat, PV technology is highly suitable for cold weather environments, on the whole even generating more power at lower temperatures. This is because they are electronic devices, and almost all electronic devices operate more efficiently at cooler temperatures. On cloudy days power output is considerably reduced.

About Your Concern

How much space do I need for a PV solar system?

The amount of space you will require will depend on a number of factors. For instance, the amount of energy you wish to produce, the panel type and orientation. It will also depend on whether the PV system will be mounted on a roof or the ground. For a domestic 4 kW system a suitable, structurally sound, south facing roof is around 32 m2 required area. You just need enough installation area, sound wiring, and a distribution board with enough room to place the inverter. We will advise you if it is impractical to install in your situation.

My roof is old and in fairly poor condition. Can I still install a Solar PV system on it?

All of the Solar PV solutions on our website are designed to be mounted on top of an existing or new roof. Although Solar PV systems are not normally heavy enough to cause structural problems, if your roof is in poor condition we would recommend that you undertake a structural survey before proceeding with your installation. If your roof is in need of repair or replacement we would recommend combining this work with your PV installation as this will help to reduce cost.

Will my system produce backup electricity when the power is out?

A typical grid-tied solar electric system is designed to shut down, or “island” during a grid power outage. This feature protects workers from being accidentally electrocuted by an active PV system on the circuit. For an additional cost, J Lanka can design a solar electric system with battery backup to provide power when the grid is out.

How will I use electricity during night?

Solar panels are known to last 40 years or longer. Typical guarantees of a solar panel include Ten years workmanship and materials warranty and a 25 year performance warranty. The typical PV panel performance warranty will guarantee 90% of rated production for 10-15 years, and 80% for 20-25 years. Solar panels are designed to withstand hail, severe wind and weather conditions assuming proper installation.

I have a multi plane Roof. So my panel quantity is limited?

No. We can utilize the maximum roof space available. With the SolarEdge power optimizer Technology we can connect a PV string with any type of panel, various numbers of Modules, Unequal alignment and with various tilts. This eradicates the tradition string type PV system drawbacks.

How much electricity my system can generate?

The amount of electricity your PV system can generate will depend on a number of factors, such as location, system size, solar resource and module orientation. A typical 2 kW system can produce approximately 220 kWh Units per month and a 4 kW system can produce approximately 450 kWh Units per month

Is Maintenance required for PV systems?

Yes minimal maintenance is required. Panels should be cleaned of debris, and anything that can block the sun to ensure maximum output. Some components may need regular inspection by professionals. Maintenance and servicing of the Solar PV System is scheduled to take place on a time interval of 4 (four) months. Prior notice will be given on the scheduled service date in the respective month. Anyhow J Lanka will monitor the status of your Solar PV system performance and status of each component carefully.

How are watts (W) different from watt hours (Wh)?

Watts are units of power measured over one second. If one watt of electric power is used for one hour, the total volume of power consumed is expressed as one watt hour, or 1Wh. Similarly, 1,000 watts of power is expressed as one kilowatt (1kW) and 1,000 watt hours as one kilowatt hour (1kWh). If a 2kW system produces power continuously for five hours, the total volume of power generated is expressed as 10kWh.

What if J Lanka doesn’t exist for 25 years? How can I claim my warranty?

Customers can claim any warranty for their equipment directly from SolarEdge or Trina Solar

What if the system doesn’t produce the guaranteed output?

J Lanka is always concerned of the customer’s satisfaction regardless of any reasons. We promise you to install more panels to your system FOC to ensure the guaranteed power production.

About Net Metering

What is Net Metering?

Net metering is a billing mechanism that credits solar energy system owners for the electricity they add to the grid. Net meters measure the balance of energy imported and exported between the customer and the grid. Excess electricity produced by the Solar PV system, beyond what is consumed by the customer, can flow into the utility grid and is registered as a credit through the net meter. If the customer’s consumption of electricity exceeds what is generated by the energy system, the meter will register the ‘net’ amount of electricity that has been supplied from the grid.

What are the advantages of using a Net Meter?

Batteries, and other stand-alone equipment, are required for a fully functional off-grid solar system and add to costs as well as maintenance. Grid-tied solar systems are therefore generally cheaper and simpler to install.

Your solar panels will often generate more electricity than what you are capable of consuming. With net metering, homeowners can put this excess electricity onto the utility grid instead of storing it themselves with batteries.

How can I replace my existing meter to a Net meter?

After the Solar System has been installed, on behalf of the customer, J Lanka will handle the application for the net meter from CEB/LECO. Thereafter an Officer from the energy company will visit your premises and will produce an estimate for the meter. Once this is paid they replace the existing meter to the Net Meter. This Process takes 3-4 Weeks time.

What is the policy of Offsetting Units from the Net Meter?

For Domestic Customers, the excess power produced can be offset any time of the month and we can Zero your bill based on your existing consumption. For Commercial customers, the excess power produced can only be offset during the Day Tariff Time range (0530-1830)

So why is Module level performance so important?

About 60% of your investment is on the solar modules, you need to observe the performance of each module individually and this service is facilitated by the SolarEdge Online monitoring Portal.

Assume there is partial shading or passing clouds over the panels. In the conventional system, The MPP tracking is tracked for the lowest string value and bring down the system performance. But with our Module level performance technology, the overall production is the summation of the maximum power of peach module. Technology advances day by day.

The Panel manufactured today is developed with a higher efficient product tomorrow and the previous products are never to be found. Due to this, as time passes on, panel replacement is never made possible in the conventional systems in the market due to Module mismatch. But with the SolarEdge Technology, any panel can be replaced with any type of Solar PV Module.

Do I need to provide a Data Connection?

Yes. The customer has to provide a data connection in order to activate the Online Updates

What is SolarEdge DC® Safety?

The SolarEdge inverter integrated SafeDC® technology enables disconnection of the inverter from the solar modules and the reduction of string DC voltage to a safe level, ensuring safe installation, maintenance and firefighting.

What is Distributing Power Harvesting in solar PV?

Distributed power harvesting systems remove the MPPT function from the inverter and transfer it to each module. The benefit of the individual MPP trackers, also called the Power Optimizers, is that the modules become self governing entities, able to locate and manage their own maximum power point. Each panel is able to deliver its maximal energy output at all times independently of other panels in a string.
